El Estero
It made sense that I would have the perfect day, as my birthday falls on the first two perfect numbers — 6 and 28. What are perfect numbers you ask? A perfect number is a positive integer that is equal to the sum of its proper divisors (e.g. 1+2+3=6; 1+2+4+7+14=28). So, yes, the first two perfect numbers are 6 & 28.
After a delicious breakfast (included in our $50/night stay at Grand Hostal Tintorera), we first stopped at a local market that was having a ribbon cutting ceremony. Much like the USA, politicians spoke and took much of the credit for this renovated area that includes several small restaurants and small stalls where merchants sell fresh produce.
Next, we rented bikes and headed toward El Estero. The ride took us along the coast, which allowed us to enjoy the cool breeze and beautiful views. The walk to El Estero was absolutely magical as we maneuvered through tree branches on white sand and blue waters. This tranquil estuary, where freshwater meets the sea, is teeming with wildlife and lined with lush mangroves that make it feel like a hidden paradise. Once we arrived, we were treated to an amazing show by the pelicans who dive-bombed for lunch with deft precision. A couple of sea lions didn’t seem to be bothered by the bird bomb.
At another stop, we trekked about 1.3 km to an incredible beach with black lava landscape. This walk provided us with a few special treats in the form of giant tortoises. One was a little perturbed when we interrupted his short, slow stroll to take his picture.
Exhausted and hot, we made our way back to the marketplace where we devoured grilled pork and swordfish. I’ve really enjoyed the fresh tasting food in Ecuador.
