Russian River
Although unsuccessful with regard to catching any salmon, we enjoyed the experience of fly fishing in the Russian/Kenai River. We took the 6:00 am Russian River ferry with the other early morning outdoorsmen. Alex quickly picked up the subtleties of fly fishing but there were no fish for any of us. We did observe three Bald Eagles who lived up to their majestic resume.
Despite our lack of luck with the salmon, the Russian River itself was a peaceful and picturesque setting for our morning adventure. The crystal-clear waters, flanked by dense spruce forests and rugged terrain, made it easy to see why this area is so beloved by Alaskan anglers. We chatted with a few friendly locals who gave us tips and shared stories of epic catches from seasons past. Just standing in the river with the mist rising off the surface and the sound of rushing water in our ears made the early wake-up call completely worth it.
While in Seward, we completed one more trek — this one to the shores of Lost Lake, which was at the base of Harding Icefield. This 4+ mile trek gave us spectacular views of the glacier and a wide variety of wildflowers.
