Byron Lake

 Tuesday, July 16

Instead of going to Denali, we headed south back to Seward.  We made a couple of stops along the way including the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Byron Glacier.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center resembled a giant zoo that attempted to recreate the ecosystem of each animal.  We saw wolves, bison, moose, reindeer, black bears and a majestic bald eagle.

Next, it was off to Byron Glacier where we braved the rain to see another one of Alaska’s signature glaciers.  The walk was only a mile before reaching our destination, which featured an icy cave and cool stream.  The short hike wound through lush forest and opened up to a dramatic landscape where the glacier loomed just beyond the rocks and brush. What made this glacier particularly memorable was the partially collapsed ice cave near its base, glowing an eerie blue even on the overcast day. Though recent safety warnings prevented us from entering, standing at the threshold and hearing the distant creaks and drips of melting ice made for another memorable moment. As the rains began to open up, we started our return back to the RV.

Finally, we made the remaining one hour drive to Seward where we arranged a dinner cruise for tomorrow night with Kenai Fjords Tours.  We had pasta for dinner and played pitch until bedtime.
