November 9: Cheetahs
It was our third day of our CKGR guided tour. And,like yesterday, the morning drive was pretty quiet although we saw a couple of elephants, several oryx, and a few ostriches. The elephants are particularly rare in this area during the current season.
As the heat began to increase, we headed toward Sunday Loop in search of cheetahs. Unfortunately, we didn’t see any cheetahs so we retreated to a local campsite to seek relief in the form of shade.
After a delicious lunch of barbecue steaks, we headed back out still in search of cheetahs. Just when it looked like our luck had run out, we got a tip on some cheetahs from another guide. We raced away from the water hole with giraffes scattering in our hot pursuit. When we arrived, we were exciting to see a female cheetah with two juveniles. As we inched closer, the juveniles got spooked and moved away. We continued this game of cat and mouse for over an hour.
Once we returned to camp at about 6:30 pm, we set up tents and barbecued once again on a roaring fire.
