November 2-3: Moremi Game Reserve
Friday, November 3
We made the 4+ hour bumpy drive from Maun to Moremi Game Reserve and were greeted by several elephants even before we arrived at the South gate. The elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, springboks, and zebras were plentiful in their natural habitat. The Moremi Game Reserve has no fences so animals are able to roam the land as they see fit.
The highlights were a few spectacular, up close views of elephants. The first was by a water hole in a picturesque natural setting with about 15 elephants – mature and infants quenched their thirst. Another encounter occurred as a smaller group of elephants crossed the road right in front of our vehicle. We also saw an absolutely beautiful giraffe that was quite content eating leaves from the top of a tree. This sighting was also extremely close to our vehicle.
We ended the evening by camping by the North gate, which had bathroom facilities including showers.

Besides a quick grocery run, we spent a quiet day at the Jump Street Chalets. I was able to apply for a couple of interim elementary principal jobs and catch up on our blog. The rest and relaxation in a cool environment was good for the body and soul.
