November 13: Lion & Lioness
It was another early morning as we left camp at 6:00 am. It’s weird not having any access to WiFi — I don't know how my son did in his first half marathon or any NFL scores from yesterday.
Our first stop was to see a small group of jackals eating a freshly killed baby elephant. We speculated on who might have killed the infant but ruled out lions. We also wondered why they would leave most of the uneaten carcass.
Next, we stumbled upon a huge lion and a lioness. We spent lots of time taking pictures of both of them as they moved to seek shade from the morning sun. After 20 minutes and over 100 pictures, we stopped by to visit our leopard friends —- the mom and juvenile were resting separately with the latter relaxing in a tree.
After a light lunch and some relaxation in the shade, we made our last afternoon safari in Savuti as we battled even more extreme heat (44 degrees C or 113 degrees F). We observed an old African Buffalo who appeared to be in a weakened condition.
