September 9: Race Day

We participated in the Atjan Wild Islands Festival 10K trail race today. The starting line was at the picturesque village of Saksun. After running around a small lake, we headed up the waterlogged mountain and began the long trek to Tjornuvik.  We mostly walked and scrambled up the mountain as we made the 500 meter ascent.  We had little trouble maneuvering through the muddy and slick course.  The peak offered the breathtaking view of Tjornuvik and its two famous freestanding rocks. I struggled mightily on the downhill as I slipped and fell on mud and wet grass a total of twelve (12) times.  Ashley, on the other hand, had only one slip at the very end of the race.   Wet, muddy and cold, we devoured a bowl of delicious salmon stew before getting a warm bus ride back to our campsite.

After a couple of hot showers and a light dinner, we headed out to the after race party in downtown Torshavn.
