September 10: Traelanipa

It was another busy day for us on the Faroe Islands.  Our first stop was to the hot tubs and sauna that were part of our Atjan Wild Islands Festival.  As you might  expect, we were the first two to make it to this secluded location at  Old Hoyvik Cove. The benefit of being early, beside being the first into the hot tub, was that we got to talk to the owner who built the sauna and rents it with the hot tub.  I absolutely love this business model of renting a transportable hot tub and sauna to small gatherings and parties.

Next, we went on our 4 hour fishing trip where we battled some choppy seas but eventually caught seven fish. I caught the first one – a flounder – the rest were haddock.  Ashley ended up making sashimi with the flounder and shared it with the rest of the boat.  A mother and son killed it as they caught about 20 haddock and one flounder.

Our final stop of the day was Traelanipa (Slave Cliff) where the ocean meets a lake.  We did a short hike to get several spectacular pictures of this unique spot where the freshwater Lake Leitisvatn appears to float above the salty North Atlantic ocean.  Dramatic vertical cliffs, a pristine lake, the icy Atlantic and green covered mountains make Traelanipa a favorite for tourists and it’s clear to see why.
