August 27: Dynjandi Waterfall

With a trek scheduled for Monday morning, we left our campsite and headed toward Isafjordur.  We had two major stops before settling in the small fishing village of Flateyri which is located about 25 minutes from tomorrow’s pick up point.

Our first stop was at another roadside hot spring adjacent to the chilly ocean waters.  While soaking in the soothing waters, we met a nice couple from Florida who were traveling in Iceland for two weeks. This site also had a swimming pool with geothermally warm waters that we also enjoyed during our brief visit.

Next, we stopped at the extremely  impressive Dynjandi Waterfall, which is located at the base of the Arnarfjörður fjord. The falls, which are often likened to a bridal veil, stand100 meters tall and a maximum of 60 meters wide.  With the Arnarfjörður fjord as a backdrop, the Dynjandi Waterfall may very well be the most majestic and beautiful waterfall in all of Iceland.

As stated previously, we camped in the village of Flateyri where we ate a hearty lunch before exploring the quiet streets.  We made our way past one of the oldest bookstores in Iceland but unfortunately, it was closed at the time.  We continued along to see a fisherman who was bringing in his substantial catch of the day which included cod, halibut and sole.  As part of Iceland tradition, we were allowed to select a fish of our choice for free since we welcomed the fisherman back to port – safely home.
