August 22: Day 4 of Laugavegur Trail

Day 4 of our hike took us from Emstrur to Thorsmork where we would be transported by bus to Reykjavík.  Over the four days, we completed over 50 miles while soaking in the incredible landscape of Iceland with several ascents, descents and Icelandic flats.

Today’s journey included two river crossings — the second one being the most intense of our entire journey.  During the relatively easy trek, we passed by unicorn mountain. At the summit, we were treated to amazing views of Iceland’s 4th largest glacier, Myrdalsjokull.

As we approached Thorsmork, the landscape changed dramatically as we witnessed some of the first trees of our 80 km trek. We walked through a birch tree forest before arriving at the lush green campgrounds.
