August 21: Day 3 of Laugavegur Trail

Although far less grueling than yesterday, today’s hike included two chilly river crossings and another 12 mile journey from Lake Alftavatn to Emstrur. We strolled through the volcanic desert of Maelifellssandur passing by the majestic volcanos Strorasula and Hattafell. The first one resembles a woman lying on her side while the second looks like a top hat.

Because of the good visibility, we were treated to outstanding views of the famous  Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull mountain glaciers.

One of the highlights of the day was our visit to the amazing Markarfljot Kolugljufur canyon, a 200 meter deep valley that has been surgically carved out by the Markarfljot river.

Our campsite for the night was the picturesque and peaceful Botnar with spectacular views of snowy mountains. We ended the night with a delicious dinner of grilled salmon, onions and garlic accompanied by salad and rice.
