August 14: Glaciers & Waterfalls
We slept in today as I struggled to get out of bed just before 7:30 am. Although we were the only ones to sleep in this parking lot, we were greeted by a few cars filled with hikers as we ate breakfast.
Next, we embarked on the 2.5 - 3 hour trek to a peaceful vantage point. The journey and destination were equally satisfying as we were treated to moss covered mountains, cascading waterfalls, glacier fed rivers and, of course, huge glaciers. We were fortunate to hit the peak at the perfect time and had a good 30 minutes to ourselves to soak in the beautiful views in all directions. The descent featured an abundance of blueberries and many tourists making the midday climb.
We enjoyed a Korean barbeque for lunch and relaxed in the warm Iceland sunshine.
