July 13-14: Driving through Denmark

Friday, July 14

It was another drive-a-thon as we began our journey at 10:00 am and arrived at the Hirtshals Port in Denmark at 9:30 pm.  While in Hamburg, we witnessed a portion of an international triathlon, which as you might imagine caused a ton of traffic. Besides a few other quick stops in Germany to grocery shop and a step for our campervan, we drove through the flat picturesque farmland of Denmark.  The fields of corn, hay and wheat reminded us of our time driving through the heartland of America.

The Hirtshals Port is a well-oiled machine as they quickly loaded and then unloaded our vehicles for the two hour trip to Norway.  The crowd didn’t seem to understand it was close to midnight when we boarded as they flocked to eat a hearty meal.  When we arrived in Norway, we drove about 25 minutes to an empty parking lot where we crashed for the evening.

It felt like a work day today and I was a van driver.  We left one campsite in Germany and drove 8 hours to another – arriving at Freizeit Camp Nordheide at 5:30 pm.  I’m beginning to sense a theme about the campsites in Germany – about half the price of Switzerland but still really high quality.  The bathroom and shower facilities are clean and seem relatively new – the sites also have small kitchens for cooking and dishwashing.
