July 12: Rhine Falls

We had rain last night for the first time in weeks.  The campsite, with its heavy price tag, was outstanding — strong WiFi, pristine bathrooms and one of the best showers I’ve had in months.  The engineering and design of the facilities are top notch from the waterless urinals to the slightly tilted floors in the showers that drained away your water skillfully.

We made the two plus hour drive to Rhine Falls, mainland Europe’s largest waterfall, and enjoyed a boat ride that brought us oh so close to the powerful waters.  We also had the chance to disembark on a small island that gave prime views of the falls, Rheinfall Bride and Lauren Castle.

Next, we planned to drive three more hours into Germany but were intercepted by the police who were doing a random check of our camper van.  We had to drive it to a remote spot where it was weighed and paperwork checked.  The officer who pulled us over was more interested in our van than any possible violation as he took several pictures for one of his friends.  As we were leaving, he handed us pens, rulers and his business card and invited us to call him if we returned to Switzerland.

We safely made it to Nature Camping Braunsbach where I made some pasta sauce and we showered before resting for the evening.
