July 11: Switzerland
The incredibly hot weather continued to scorch Italy as we woke up at 5:00 am to a humid 85 degrees. Our plan to drive early to Lake Como was foiled by a long crack in our front windshield. I read that a crack could be caused by extreme temperatures and we had blistering heat of near 100 degrees along with running our ice cold AC.
The front glass repair was the first sign that it was going to be an expensive day as it cost us a cool $935.34. With gas, groceries, tolls and a Switzerland camping site ($64.86), the grand total for the day was a budget-busting $1215.01. As a point of comparison, we spent a little over $1300 for the entire month of June in Morocco. It’s safe to say that we’re not in Morocco anymore.
With the delayed start and wicked hot temps (98), we drove by Lake Como and headed into Switzerland. I was definitely disappointed that we didn’t take the ferry on this placid body of water.
As for the ride through Switzerland on our way to Chur, the views were breathtaking with green rolling hills, valleys and gingerbread houses. The hills are alive with the Sound of Music.
