March 30: Caminito Del Rey
We completed the spectacular 7.7 km trek at Caminito del Rey. And, just like at Alhambra, the crowds were enormous. This exhilarating hike along a man made walkway built against the steep walls of a narrow gorge over 100 meters above the river below was definitely not for the faint of heart. Originally built in the early 20th century, it underwent a major renovation in 2011. Prior to the renovation, it was described as the “world’s most dangerous walkway” due to several deaths between 1999 and 2000.
The highlight of this amazing journey was toward the end of the hike when we walked across a suspension bridge that bounced with each step. The views just before the suspension bridge were also jaw dropping as you were able to get a true appreciation of the precipitous cliffs and green river below. It was a trek that we will soon not forget.
