March 22: Benagil Cave & Algar Seco

Yesterday, we saw the caves along the Seven Hanging Valley Trail from above the water. Today — we got a close up look of them from the water as we embarked on a memorable two hour kayak tour. The views in the first cave, the Benagil Cave, were incredible. With the assistance of a guide, we disembarked on the private beach in this cave. We weren’t alone as about 100 other visitors crowded to get the perfect picture in an absolutely beautiful spot. The cave has two openings to turquoise waters and a huge one that lets in the clear blue sky.  We continued on the choppy Atlantic to explore the other caves and secluded beaches. I’d rate this adventure an A++ — something you have to do when visiting Portugal.

After a quick lunch, we drove to Algar Seco to hike along the cliffs and explore the many caves and naturally formed arches. The cliffs are estimated to be between 16 and 24 millions years old and erosion has helped to form many incredible crevices and cavities.  The views through the many arches were unbelievable!  Yes — it was quite the day.  It will be tough to top this one tomorrow.
