March 20: Lagos
We woke up early (6:00 am) and caught another amazing sunrise on the beach. We were joined by several other sunrise and exercise enthusiasts.
We spent the majority of the day at a pretty secluded beach in Lagos. It was a bit of an adventure to get to it but it was well worth the effort. We first walked through a cave and then waded in thigh high water to make it to our destination. The small, private beach was surrounded by cliffs and a spectacular view of the ocean. We enjoyed the peaceful surroundings as boats and kayaks made their way through the caves in the clear ocean. I made one venture into the icy Atlantic— think Hampton Beach in late May/early June. As you might imagine, it didn’t last that long but was still quite refreshing.
As the hours passed, the high tide brought the waters close to the cliffs, leaving only a strip of sand for our chairs and beach towel. By about 3:30 pm, the tide began to retreat and shadows started to form, which dropped the temperature so we decided it was a good time to head back to camp where we ate dinner and caught up on some reading.
