March 18: Lisbon
We had a really busy day in Lisbon as we left our campsite at 9:30 am and returned at about 10:30 pm. After strolling around the beautiful Praca Dom Pedro IV Square, we had lunch at an Asian Mercado. While we were eating, we met an awesome young couple from Brazil who moved to Lisbon about two years ago.
Next, we went to St. George Castle and were rewarded with some spectacular views of Lisbon. Next, we caught a trolley and then a bus to Pasteis De Belem where we joined hundreds of others in line to taste their famous egg custard tarts. We bought 6 of the 20,000 that are sold daily at this pastry Mecca.
We raced back across the city along the beautiful coastline on a tram where we first stopped at Ginginha Do Carmo for a shot of sour cherry liquor in a chocolate shot glass. I don’t think it was quite as good as the one we had in Obidos but still pretty tasty.
We ended the night on a high note as we had a delicious dinner at Cafe Luso and listened to the soulful sound of Fado. According to Wikipedia, “fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor, and infused with a sentiment of resignation, fate and melancholy.”
