March 13: Nazare

After a relaxing Monday morning, we were on the road to Nazare, home of the biggest waves in the world – averaging over 50 feet in the winter and a maximum of 80 feet in perfect conditions for brave surfers.  You might be asking yourself – “Why are the waves so big in Nazare?” Well, according to information gathered at Forte Sao Miguel Arcanjo, the Nazare Canyon, which is 3 miles deep and 143 miles long, is the driving force for the mega waves. The crash of the waves against the beautifully colored rocks was exhilarating.

We spent a couple of hours exploring the rocky coastline before finding a beautiful spot for lunch. Ashley made a delicious Korean dish that we enjoyed while watching the waves crash along the spectacular Nazare North Beach.
