February 6: Sicily
We arrived in Sicily at 9:00 am — about an hour early. Can you believe that? That’s the good news. Unfortunately, Ashley’s phone stopped working again and we had to stop at the mall to purchase another SIM card — yikes.
Eventually, we drove to Caccamo Castle (Castello di Caccamo). The castle was built in the 12th century on a large rocky base overlooking a beautiful green valley that includes Lake Rosamarina. According to Wikipedia, “It is among the largest and best preserved Norman castles in Sicily, and one of the largest in Italy.” But, as luck would have it, they closed just as we arrived.
Undeterred, we moved onto Cefalu’ where we walked around the old town to see the Cathedral of Cefalù (Italian: Duomo di Cefalù) and the city’s picturesque beach. The Roman Catholic cathedral has a fortress-like structure. According to Wikipedia, “The cathedral was erected between 1131 and 1240 in the Norman architectural style, the island of Sicily having been conquered by the Normans in 1091.”
