February 4: Pompeii

Holy Mount Vesuvius Batman— Pompeii is incredible!  The 13 to 20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius  buried the city of Pompeii and its people in 79 AD.  This unspeakable tragedy left behind one of the most well preserved ancient Roman cities in the world.

We walked around in awe of this famous  “frozen in time” city with our Korean friends for over three hours. We were amazed by the houses, roads, columns, art work, and the Forums that were in such excellent condition.  The Amphitheater, Palestra and private homes like House of the Faun were particularly impressive with beautiful details that gave tremendous insight to how people lived and were entertained about 2000 years ago. According to Britannica, the House of Faun, one of the most luxurious houses, was “built during the second Samnite period (200-80 BC) occupying over an entire city block.” The architecture, engineering and city planning were magnificent to behold.
