February 28: Carcassonne

It’s the last day of February, which brought another morning of light rain and gray skies. After a casual morning at the campsite, we drove over three hours to Carcassonne, which is famous for its medieval castle, La Cite’.  It was another costly drive as we paid over $60 in tolls and $80 in gas, which made us regret the decision not to take the ferry from Genoa to Barcelona.

Once we arrived, we found a quiet campsite and made the 20 minute walk to the castle. We spent a little over an hour exploring this exceptional structure, which dates back over 2500 years.  According to Wikipedia, “The citadel was restored at the end of the 19th century and in 1997 it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites because of its exceptional testimony to the architecture and planning of a medieval fortress town.”
