February 24: The Last Supper
I saw the Last Supper, ate a delicious early dinner at Nabucco, and walked inside the largest Duomo in Italy! As part of a three hour walking tour of Milan, our first stop was the mind blowing Last Supper by DaVinci. We spent about 15 minutes getting a look at this masterpiece from every angle possible. I probably took about 25 pictures in the short time that we had soaking in this major work of art. The rest of the tour paled in comparison but to be fair, it was a hard act to follow. According to Wikipedia, “The Last Supper or L’Ultima Cena is a mural painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci dated to c. 1495-1498. It represents the scene of the Last supper of Jesus and the Twelve Apostles – specifically at the moment after Jesus announces that one of his apostles will betray him.”
I was reunited with Ashley at about 12:15 pm and we immediately went into the Duomo. The interior was as magnificent, if not more so, than the exterior. The columns were plentiful and immense in size. The level of detail was incredible. Next, it was up the stairs to the viewpoints of the Duomo. We wrestled with many other tourists in an attempt to get the perfect picture of this best of the best Duomos. According to Wikipedia, “The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete: construction began in 1386, and the final details were completed in 1965. It is the largest church in the Italian Republic—the larger St. Peter's Basilica is in the State of Vatican City, a sovereign state—and one of the largest in the world.”
From here, we indulged in some fine cuisine at Nabucco. We had the saffron risotto with ossobuco jus, caramelized orange zest, and toasted almond slices; and the tenderloin with grilled peppers — both were out of this world. I also had a tasty grapefruit martini to put a bow on this wonderful last supper in Milano.
