February 15: Terme di Petriolo
We got up early and caught a nice sunrise in Pienza. We also explored the quaint and well-manicured city with striking 15th century buildings that include the Pienza Cathedral and Piccolomini Palace (summer home of Pope Pius II). And, if it’s good enough for the Pope, it must be special.
From here, we took the scenic drive to Brunello di Montalcino Winery and bought a bottle after tasting a couple of reasonably priced options. We stopped several times to take pictures and explore — one time we trekked through a cow manure field for the perfect photo — not sure it was worth it.
Next, we drove to Terme di Petriolo but stopped a few meters short and experienced the same thermal baths for free. The place was crowded with locals and nomads — a hippie paradise. I met a nice couple from the USA who have moved permanently to Tuscany — they seemed extremely happy. After lunch, I spent most of the day in the hot mineral waters chatting with Sean — a really cool guy from California.
