February 12: Super Bowl Sunday (Valley of the Temples & Scala dei Turchi)

Welcome to Super Bowl Sunday in Sicily!  It seems like we’re making up for lost time as today was another busy one.

We were first in line to enter the Valley of the Temples, which is an excellent example of Greek art and architecture. We were both amazed by the condition of the temples but were particularly blown away by the Temple of Concordia and Temple of Juno. The Temple of Concordia rivaled the Pantheon in Athens as one of the most impressive ancient structures we have seen so far on our travels.  Besides the majesty of the temples, the grounds with fig and olive trees along with a colorful selection of wild flowers made the experience extremely pleasurable.

Next, we found a cool campsite (Punta Piccola Park) right along the water and only a ten minute walk to Scala dei Turchi in Agrigento. It was my first attempt at making pasta e fagioli — I need a bigger pot, canned beans and chicken stock next time.

We ended the night on a high note as we caught a spectacular sunset at Scala dei Turchi.  The ivory white cliffs in the shape of steps were the perfect backdrop for the yellow, orange and red colors provided by the sun and sky.  This sunset came close to eclipsing the famous Boracay one that we experienced in the Philippines.
