January 28: Olympia
It was our last day in Greece and we are sad to be leaving — the only saving grace is that we are heading to Italy! Seriously, our 19 days in Greece have been wonderful and today didn’t disappoint — as we visited Olympia and a famous winery in Patara, Achaia Clauss.
Walking through the ancient ruins of Olympia was an incredible experience as you walked along the same paths and athletic fields as Greek Olympians had over two thousand years ago. We spent extra time at the place where the Olympic torch is lit as it makes its journey to the site of our modern Olympics to officially open the games. We also made our way to the starting line of the foot races, “balbides,” which were permanent long narrow stone slabs with two parallel grooves along them.
Next, it was off to one of the oldest wineries in Patara. The Achaia Clauss was a spectacular venue with an amazing view of the Port of Patra and amazing grounds that were meticulously maintained. We bought two of their more moderately priced wines before heading to the port.
After a quick Korean lunch, we boarded our ferry to Bari, Italy. There were so many highlights in Greece but here are just a few of my favorites: Meteora, Delphi, Acropolis, Olympia, sunset at Oia in Santorini, Chania and Balos Beach & Lagoon in Crete.
