January 27: Corinth Canal & Mycanae
Note to self — always get a cabin on any overnight ferry. We woke up rested and ready for another busy day even though the alarm went off at 5:00 am. Upon arrival at the port near Greece, we immediately hit the road for our first stop of the day — Corinth Canal. As we walked along the bridge and looked down into the canal, we noticed signs for bungee jumping — yikes. I would have to be blindfolded and pushed to make that leap. The canal is 4 miles long but only 80 feet wide, which makes it impassable for most boats.
Next stop was the historical treasure Mycenae Archeological Site. In reading some of the information on its website, I discovered that Mycenae, “the kingdom of the mythical Agamemnon, first praised by Homer in his epics, is the most important and richest palatial centers of the Late Bronze Age(1350 - 1200 BC) in Greece.”
Although we planned to drive Olympia, we stopped at a beach about a half hour away and camped right by the sea for the night. We met a lovely German woman who was traveling alone in a cool looking green military vehicle. The sunset was absolutely spectacular.
