January 23: Balos Beach & Lagoon
We had another terrific day in Crete. We made the 2-hour drive from Chania to Balos Beach. The last couple of miles were on a dirt road that hugged the rugged coastline and was home to hundreds of goats. We stopped to take several pictures of both the beautiful coastline and the cute goats.
After getting to the parking lot, we made the 2.2 km trek to Balos Beach and Lagoon. It was certainly worth the minor effort — we were dazzled by the crystal clear turquoise waters, white/pink sands and exotic scenery. It is no wonder why Balos is the most photographed beach on Crete.
Besides taking a quick plunge in the cold waters, we spent most of our time taking pictures and walking on the soft sand. We were so impressed that we walked back down after dinner to catch a brilliant sunset.
