January 11: Meteora
It was quite an extraordinary day as we saw one of the most spectacular sunrises that we’ve seen since we’ve been traveling. The sunset this morning at Vikos Gorge rivaled the one that we were fortunate enough to have witnessed atop Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka. Next, we did a short hike in the valley of the gorge with the highlight being the incredible stone bridges that were along the trail. The Kokkorou and Misios Stone Bridges marked the beginning and end of our hike and provided amazing photo opportunities.
I never thought that the best sunrise would be overshadowed but that was before we made it to Meteora. Meteora is a magical place where nature’s beauty has been enhanced by humans. The monasteries are the cherry on top of the incredible naturally created rock forest. The monasteries are an architectural and engineering marvel that sit atop the amazing rock sculptures that nature created for us. We were both humbled and moved by the natural beauty and majesty of Meteora — it is definitely one place that will last in our memories forever.
The magical day continued when we returned to our lovely campsite and parked next to a couple from New Hampshire. I was so excited to see the NH license plates and it was wonderful to meet Cate and John – I hope that our paths will cross again soon.
