December 1, 2021: Sanfranbolu
We were on the road by 6:00 am as we drove from Istanbul to Sanfranbolu. Pretty uneventful ride except for the fact that we ran into some rain, fog, and snow. It is much colder in Safranbolu than anywhere else we’ve been in Turkey — about 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees F). We quickly walked around the small old town with its traditional Turkish housing along with a much smaller and far less crowded version of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. The tiny streets reminded me of Sirince as I was once again challenged to maneuver through really tight spaces.
Accommodations: A- (Safran City Hotel)
Stayed in a huge, clean room with beautiful views of Safranbolu along with complimentary water and coffee for only $27.
Food: B- (Zencefil)
We had a late Turkish breakfast for only 60 lira per person with delicious hot rolls that were perfect for dipping in the fresh honey. We also enjoyed an order of manti (Turkish ravioli) for only 35 lira.
