September 17: Oktoberfest

We had a blast at the opening of the 2022 Oktoberfest.  After a night of loud music that eventually ended at 2:00 am, we got some well needed rest in advance of our drink fest!

After a morning workout, we headed out to catch the train to Munich’s Oktoberfest.  We met a really nice German couple on the train and got some great intel from the wife and husband.  The husband told us to go to the Augustine tent as he felt it was one of the best beers. The wife gave us the skinny on the parade and how to get into a tent.

Upon arrival, we had to check our large bag before we could enter.  Once in the great park, we went into one of the tents, which was basically empty except for a few revelers who were starting with dry sausages, cheese, fruit and pretzels.

We went outside and had a great spot to see the long parade that consisted of horse drawn carriages, bands and dignitaries.  Each tent had its own band and horse drawn carriage— as the parade ended, the band and people on the carriages descended into the tents.

When we tried to enter the Augustino tent, we were told that we couldn’t bring in any food that Ashley had packed. So we had to leave the main park and go back to the luggage check. When we finally got into the tent, the place was packed — an absolute full house with people drinking and the band firing up the crowd.  We eventually found a spot right next to the band sharing space with two Indian couples and a guy from Michigan.

Although the beers cost about 14 euros each, we had a couple and also ate some food — chicken for me and mackerel for Ashley.  It was a memorable experience—one in which I became quite drunk.  It was the most woozy I’ve been in a while.

Ashley and I got lost getting home and I was absolutely no help as I stumbled around the city.  We eventually made it back to the campsite and after some reading collapsed.
