July 5: Wimbledon
I didn’t make it to the queue but we eventually headed toward Wimbledon. I wasn’t sure what to expect after leaving the apartment at 11:00 am but didn’t have high hopes. We made quick stops to pick up an adapter and some food for the day. We then made our way to a coffee shop so we could charge my dead phone.
At about 1:10 pm, I checked the Wimbledon website for tickets and wouldn’t you know that there were two for Court #1 for 320 pounds. A little steep but a once in a lifetime opportunity. We bought the tickets and jogged to the stadium for the 1:00 pm women’s quarterfinals match between Maria and Niemier both from Germany. In an entertaining three setter, Maria won 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
The women’s match was a nice appetizer for the main course — another quarterfinal between hometown hero Cameron Norrie and David Goffin. It was an awesome match with many twists and changes in momentum. Norrie eventually reigned supreme with a tough 5 set victory 3-6 7-5 2-6 6-3 7-5. A boyhood dream came true —a day I will never forget — the 6.5 hours seated at court side went quickly. The view was spectacular!!!
