June 4: Grossglockner Scenic Byway
We decided to head out at 5:00 am to the Grossglockner Scenic Byway, which is often described as the most beautiful drive in Europe. It took us a bit over 2 hours to arrive at the gate where we paid 30 euros for the day. The 30 km drive was full of twists and turns as it serpentined through this incredible mountain range. We stopped several times to take pics, hike and eat. Stop #4 provided the most beautiful views as we hiked along a car pathed road. Besides some amazing views, we saw an incredible hotel at the top.
It definitely got more crowded during the mid-afternoon. As we were leaving, we noticed a long cue at the entrance and a ton of motorcycles, scooters and vehicles arriving at the scenic drive. We talked about how fun it would be to drive the route on a scooter. We also saw a lot of people making the drive on bicycles— what a flipping workout!!!
We then headed out on the hour plus drive to the Krimml Waterfall. After paying a small fee to park, we walked a short way to the base of the three level falls to take pics. At this point, we noticed people waking up to the top of the falls so we began the steady incline. The walk up was invigorating and provided plenty of viewpoints and rest areas. We took full advantage of the viewpoints to take pictures. Eventually, we ended up at the top of the falls where a restaurant awaited us along with several other visitors. I had a hotdog, beer and Apple strudel for my reward and then quickly headed down.
On the way home, we stopped at the grocery store before awaiting A’s arrival. I picked him up at the train station around 6 o’clock. Ashley prepared a delicious dinner for us and we ate before passing out after a long day.
