April 29: Southernmost Point
We got up early and made our way to the most southern point in the USA, which is only 70 miles north of Cuba. Next, we drove to a nice spot to view the sunrise. Although mother nature was not cooperative with giving us what we came to see, we did meet an awesome group of Korean tourists from Los Angeles. We spent a good chunk of time learning about them and also taking time to share our y traveling stories from the past year.
After getting back to our campsite, we took our time getting ready for the rest of the day. After a quick shower, we headed back out to Mallory Square – thought to be the best place to see sunsets – and parked our car for $30 for the entire day.
From here, we walked down to a tiny beach with chairs, two beers and a change of clothes. I spent some time in the ocean – floating as the strong current took me on quite a ride. Ashley spent a good amount of time sleeping and relaxing.
Next, we visited a couple of restaurants/bars before settling on a tapas one. The food was just Ok and the waitress was terrible. As we explored the downtown, it became quite evident that Key West was a party place – every bar with live music that we poked our head into was absolutely mobbed with drunks.
We walked down to the sunset madness and watched a guy doing card tricks and another one attempting to sing. The sunset was pretty nice but paled in comparison to the one that we saw in Boracay. One big problem was not having enough sailboats in the background. One highlight was a guy riding a flying surfboard – really cool look. He made it look easy although I’m sure it was super challenging.
