January 6: White Desert Sunrise
Trains, 4x4s, and automobiles — we spent a good portion of the day in some form of transportation. We woke up early to catch another remarkable sunrise — the White Desert is absolutely spectacular. After a quick morning breakfast, it was off to a hot spring for a warm, relaxing bath. We then headed out for the long journey back to the Comfort Pyramid Hotel.
Upon our arrival, we got the bad news that our train ride was for 1:00 am instead of the previously agreed upon 10:00 pm. They put us in the “luxury” suite for us to rest and relax before the next leg of our journey. We went back to the Pyramids restaurant and pigged out again on excellent Egyptian food including grilled lamb and quail.
After a couple hours rest, we headed out at 9:00 pm for the market but our plans were about to change dramatically. When KImchi realized the train ticket was not for a sleeping car, she completely lost it. We ended up canceling the remainder of our tour and got a refund of $800.
We still made it to Khan el-Khalili Souk albeit for a short time. A bought a nice piece of Papyrus for his mom. He paid 210 Egyptian pounds or $13.36. The bazaar was definitely happening and I wish we had more time to spend.
The 1:10 am train didn’t leave until closer to 1:45 am. Although Kimchi and I slept a bit, I don’t think A slept a second. I now fully comprehend why Kimchi was so upset. Regardless, we’re off to Luxor.
